AVDS
The Automated Vulnerability Detection System

Current LSS and SAS Version: 2.20 build 933, 3.00 build 753 and 4.00 build 181

AVDS Overview

The Automated Vulnerability Detection System (AVDS) simulates both external and internal attacks on your network. To accomplish this, Beyond Security's AVDS first performs a security mapping of an organization's network. Once the security mapping is complete, AVDS generates a detailed vulnerability report specifying the security breaches, along with practical and easy-to-apply solutions to fix them. The AVDS engine is updated daily to include the most recent security vulnerabilities. AVDS is available as a hardware or software version.

Customers implementing AVDS will have, for the first time, a real-time view of their entire network security topography and will be able to clearly demonstrate compliance with emerging global IT security standards and integrity legislation.

Security and Compliance Challenges

The frequency and severity of today's security threats and vulnerabilities are forcing companies to intensify their focus on:

  • Strengthening current network security processes and procedures to protect against attacks from both external and internal threats
  • Deploying new security solutions that go beyond core-level technology to span the entire network
  • Responding to changing customer and partner requirements brought about by organizational changes, access, permissions and constantly changing operational procedures
  • Mandated IT upgrades, policy changes and legislative changes

Active Network Scanning

With an average of 300 new operating system and application vulnerabilities announced each and every month the need to do active network scanning is as essential as maintaining an anti-virus protection. An automated, ongoing vulnerability assessment and management solution is now a genuine option in AVDS.

The Enterprise now needs active network scanning to be run on a regular scheduled basis and on demand to assess changes. This may require weekly or even daily scanning due to the increasing complexity of vulnerabilities and the speed at which they can now be exploited and should be performed as a specialized service.

With the increasing complexity of networks, the number of vulnerabilities being discovered daily, the speed at which exploits can launch malicious code and the ease of installation of rogue devices, performing vulnerability and network security assessments annually, bi-annually or even quarterly is no longer a sufficient risk mitigation strategy for today's well protected network.

Similarly, the challenge of staying up to date with the current vulnerabilities is now a specialist task, and should be assigned to a dedicated solution capable of updating automatically for new threats and scanning on a predefined schedule.

Beyond Security has taken vulnerability scanning to the next level - developing a new way to approach this important task by providing it as an Automated Daily Scanning solution run by a powerful management dashboard.

While Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems still play an important role, by doing an active network scanning of both your internal and external networks for the latest vulnerabilities every day or even every hour, your level of network protection will reach a new level.

AVDS performs a comprehensive, regular vulnerability assessment on the network and produces a detailed report that contains:

  • An executive summary
  • A comprehensive list of all vulnerabilities discovered
  • A range of solutions to those vulnerabilities
  • The list of all simulated attacks performed.

Automated Scanning Server Reports

  • The Standard Report
The AVDS report provides a comprehensive analysis of vulnerabilities found. An "Executive Summary" section shows an overall summary, illustrated by charts and graphs to allow quick assessment of the risks found in the scan. The "Possible Vulnerabilities" section shows the technical information for every vulnerability found, including a short summary, severity, possible impact, recommended solution and links to more information. The standard report is a powerful tool for network administrators, security officers and IT managers to evaluate the level of security of the server or network.

  • The Differential Report
This unique reporting feature allows you to receive only the changes from the previous scan. New vulnerabilities, open ports, running services or new/removed hosts are noted, as well as a summary of the problems that were fixed. This crucial management tool immediately highlights potential risks, unauthorized activity or security-related network actions. The Trend Analysis is a graphical illustration showing the changes of risk level over time and the results of implementing security handlings. The vulnerabilities section of the differential report will show what new issues need to be dealt with.
